History of Heraldry
Heraldic Imagery and Coats of Arms were developed in the Medieval Ages, as ways for knights to identify themselves on the battlefields. Their sons would then inherit the decorated shields that their fathers’ fought with. Sometimes they made slight adjustments to the imagery, or combined multiple shield artwork, for new generations. By the 14th century, heraldic authorities began to form in order to record and preserve the varieties of family coats of arms. In a modern context, a family’s heraldic Coat of Arms has come to be a tool of genealogy. It has helped generations to stay connected for hundreds of years.
“A coat of arms is a heraldic visual design on an escutcheon (i.e., shield), surcoat, or tabard. The coat of arms on an escutcheon forms the central element of the full heraldic achievement which in its whole consists of shield, supporters, crest, and motto. A coat of arms is traditionally unique to an individual person, family, state, organization or corporation.” ~Wikipedia, Multiple Sources.
