History of Heraldry §

Heraldry (aka armoury) is an age-old method of identification, even dating back to before the use of last names. In the Middle Ages, knights would paint symbols on their shields and armor to identify each other in battle, as their identifying features were hidden under the protective metal. Over time, the symbols began to take on meaning within families, with each new generation adding slight adjustments to the designs and ladies of honor sporting the arms of the men in their lives. While these coats of arms and heraldic symbols were originally reserved for the heads of families and the highest of noblemen, today we can fashionably enjoy the rich history that connects our families to those brave knights of old.
